Summer Not So Bright For Kids in L.A.
June 13, 2012
This summer, almost all of Los Angeles Unified’s 664,000 students will be out of school.
Due in part to changes in the school calendar, the opening of new schools, and budget cuts, many of these students will have limited options during the summer months.
In past years, the LAUSD provided robust summer programming through Beyond the Bell that included summer school for grades 2 to 12. Moreover, it provided summer programs that included recreational and enrichment opportunities for 30,000 students.
For the 188,500 students who would normally participate in summer school, these programs would cost in excess of 40 million dollars each year. A portion of those dollars would be recouped from the State of California based upon student attendance. However, due to budget cuts this year, the LAUSD will only be able to provide classes for 11th and 12th grade students, as space permits.
The academic programs for younger students who need academic support during the summer to catch up, keep pace, or to support their transition from elementary to secondary school, are not available.
While donors and sponsors such as The Carson Foundation and LA84 Foundation have supported a variety of Beyond the Bell student programs, support for academic summer programming has not been able to keep pace with the budget cuts. Beyond the Bell has developed informational sheets describing the programs and their respective funding needs; programs such as “Bridge to Success” that supports matriculating elementary and middle school students.
In spite of the fiscal crisis, Beyond the Bell will continue to fulfill its mission to ensure that all children and youth in LAUSD have access to high quality, safe, and supervised academic, enrichment, and recreation programs that inspire learning and achievement. To that end, it will post available summer and other opportunities as they become available on its website. Please visit the website for more information or to support this important endeavor.
