Morocco Earthquake Relief Resources

September 12, 2023

On September 8, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Morocco in the High Atlas Mountains, about 45 miles from the city of Marrakech. The earthquake devastated towns and villages in the isolated mountain areas and injured thousands of people, leaving many without shelter and basic infrastructure. As one of the strongest earthquakes the country has experienced in over a century, there have been over 2,500 deaths reported.

How to Help

As the country deploys rescue and disaster relief efforts, the following organizations are actively involved in providing immediate relief, assistance, and essential services to community members:

  • CARE is coordinating with Moroccan authorities to provide meals, safe water supply, emergency shelter and medical support to families. Having worked in Morocco since 2008, their emergency response will prioritize women and girls, the elderly, families with young children, and those unable to access other emergency services.
  • The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are on the ground coordinating closely with local authorities to assess the situation, support in the search and rescue operation, and provide help to affected people. They are providing first aid, psychological support and helping transport the injured to hospitals.
  • Islamic Relief USA has staff in Morocco assessing the most critical needs and identifying local humanitarian organizations to work with to deliver vital aid to impacted communities. Food, shelter, and healthcare are expected to be the most urgent needs.
