Omar Brownson: Cast a Vote Today!
October 3, 2013
By Omar Brownson, Executive Director of the Los Angeles River Revitalization CorporationWhat LA landmark did Mayor Garcetti just select to welcome visitors at LAX? The Los Angeles River. Less than three years ago when I was asked to become the first executive director of the LA River Corp., I did not even know that LA had a river. Now, I see the 51 miles of this river turned flood control channel as a great linear central park. This is a big deal. The LA River Corp. is a nonprofit created by the City of Los Angeles to revitalize the LA River corridor. We’re swinging for the fences, working across philanthropy, public agencies, other non-profits and corporations to build a greenway with parks, cafes, and art walks that I can bring my daughters to and that all Angelenos can enjoy.
In recognition of our great start, the LA River Corp. has been selected as a finalist to receive the Bank of the West Innovation in Philanthropy Award. The LA River Corp. is the only nonprofit from Los Angeles in the running to win $50,000. We are in the Final 3 to win a Facebook contest for the most votes (you can vote everyday until Oct.4th).
Please click here at bit.ly/BOTWContest. Vote for us, and come visit the LA River.
